1) Be sure that Front Page is installed and working
correctly on your computer. Test it by creating a test web. When you are
ready,
2) You can go to http://your-domain-name.com
two ways, either by (A) getting on line first, then opening the
"live" site through the Internet Explorer. Or, (B) open Front
Page first, then click "OPEN WEB" and type in the above
address and open the live site through Front Page.
3) If you choose (A), and are using MS Internet Explorer, click on EDIT
at the top of your screen. Select "EDIT WITH MICROSOFT FRONT
PAGE". If that is not visible, go to TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS,
PROGRAMS and select Microsoft Front Page as your html editor. Then,
click on EDIT, etc. as above.
4) It will attempt to open the site, and ask you for your user name (XXXXX)
and password (XXXXXXXX). Type in the info (from your Welcome E-mail) and hit enter/okay.
5) It may take a while, but wait until the red light with the x inside
(upper right corner of your screen on the toolbar) is no longer bright.
At that time, all of the files for your site will be on your computer.
6) Immediately publish the site to your own computer. If you have the
server extensions installed, you will create a server-based web on your
computer by publishing to http://localhost/your-domain-name
. If not, you will create a disk-based web on your computer by
publishing to http://e/your-domain-name
. If you do not publish the site to your own computer, you will not be
able to open if for editing unless you are connected to the Internet.
7) You can close the live site and make changes to the disk-based web
then reconnect to the Internet and upload. Or, keep the live site open, make the changes you want and
publish back to the disk-based web when complete. Either way, please
make sure both webs have the exact same content. Otherwise, you risk
overwriting it.
8) Use the test page (yoursite_test.htm) until you are familiar with
using FP. After you get that page the way you want it, follow the
instructions I wrote on the test page to copy it to the correct page.
9) Here's what to do if you can not publish to your site while it is
live. First, minimize it. Then, go to Start/Programs/Windows Explorer.
Once the Windows Explorer is open, create a folder under your C:\ drive,
rename it "My Site". Click on the "Front Page"
button in the task bar at the bottom of your screen. At the top of the
page, on the right, click the center button with double boxes. That will
decrease the size of your screen. In the Front Page folders view, click
on the name of your site in the top left pane. Or, highlight all of the
files and folders in the right hand pane. Drag the highlighted folders
to the new folder you created the Front Page.
10) PLEASE! do not make any changes to the other pages in the site
without letting me know. Otherwise, I risk overwriting them. Your main
page and keywords have been optimized for good results in the search
engines. If you want to change them later (about eight weeks from
now after all of the
engines that will list you have had a chance to do so) no problem.
11) Notify me by e-mail after the changes are made so that
I can update my copy of your site and files.
12) The folder marked "stats" is a server traffic
file on your "live" site and should be deleted from the disk-based web.
If you do not delete the folder, when you upload changes, the new stats
for your domain will be overwritten.
13) My suggestion: choose one method of updating (A) or the other (B)
and stick to it.
If you get REALLY frustrated, just e-mail the changes to me as an
attachment and I will take care of it for you free if it takes less than
20 minutes to complete.. :-) If you have any problems logging in to your account, refer to your sign-up information sheet. Or,
call/ e-mail me and tell me it is an emergency. I will respond to you as soon
as I can. |
